Remembering Amber: A Story of Love,
Community, and Legacy

Amber Averkamp
Amber Averkamp was more than a beloved staff member at Sheboygan Senior Community. She poured joy and spirit into every day, delighting residents with whimsical holiday scenes she lovingly curated in the Hickory dining room year after year. Her creativity and attention to detail became a cherished part of the holiday season at SSC, bringing smiles to countless residents, families, and staff.
Amber’s life was rooted in service, creativity, and community. She was a familiar and welcoming presence in Sheboygan Falls, known for her kindness, generosity, and deep care for others. Many in the community fondly remember her as Miss Ducky at the annual Ducktona celebration on the Fourth of July, where her personality and joy shined just as brightly as they did every day at SSC.
After bravely beating cancer once, Amber was later diagnosed again. With much of her family living far away, the SSC community stepped in to surround her with care and companionship. Our Director of Nursing, Jill, personally accompanied Amber to medical appointments. A beloved staff member, Tina, made those appointments a little brighter by taking Amber flower shopping afterward, something Amber deeply loved. Staff member Val began a lighthearted tradition of picking up McDonald’s meals after appointments after learning Amber had never had fast food before in her life. Even our Business Office Manager, Tara, helped with everyday needs and maintaining her home, and our CEO stepped in whenever support was needed. These acts of compassion were not obligations. They were genuine expressions of how SSC cares for its people.
During visits, Amber insisted that everyone take a photo with her next to an old-fashioned antique walker she kept nearby. Those photos have become treasured memories for staff, moments filled with laughter, connection, and love that are still looked back on with great fondness.

In gratitude for the care and support she received, Amber chose to give something deeply meaningful. She made an estate gift of her home in Sheboygan Falls to Sheboygan Senior Community. It was a powerful and personal expression of trust, appreciation, and belief in SSC’s mission. An avid art collector and self-taught artist, Amber filled her home with creativity, color, and pieces of her identity. Through her gift, that spirit continues to live on.

This holiday season, we remember Amber for her feisty personality, her loyalty, her love of beauty and tradition, and her generous heart. Her story is a reminder that SSC is more than a workplace or a care facility. It is a community that shows up for one another in moments that matter most.

If Amber’s story resonates with you, we invite you to consider how a planned gift may become part of your own legacy. Estate gifts and other planned giving options help ensure compassionate care continues for seniors in our community for generations to come.
